I am absolutely in love with Indigo oh my goodness. Did you identify some wordplay, parallels and connections to Mono and Namjoon’s story?
My favourite wordplay of the moment is in No.2 with Parkjiyoon. In the Outro, it sounds like they are singing, “No looking back, no.”
But the word “No” sounds like 너 which means “You”.
So the Outro could also be heard as:
So 너
No looking back 너 x2
너 looking back don’t look back no more
No looking back 너 x2
You’ve done your best
This interpretation sounds more directive and strict. Like: Hey you. Yes you. Don’t you look back no more.
Just brilliant isn’t he?
Okay, let’s get back to everythingoes, let’s go!
This post unfortunately requires a trigger warning: Mentions of death and depression.
New readers, you’re about to jump into the middle of Namjoon’s life and if you haven’t read my previous blog posts where I’ve tied together Namjoon’s story from 2013 up to 2018 through his lyrics (mostly from the Love Yourself albums), you may lack context. In my blog we build on existing knowledge and I’ve designed it to be read in chronological order.
I was able to create the chronology based on two principles:
- BTS has said over and over again that all of their songs are written based on their past experiences. This means that when a song was written in 2018, it can only be about something that happened prior to 2018.
- While a writer can write a song for someone else to sing, ultimately they are still writing their own story. It is not possible to write an accurate story about someone else’s intimate life and love for their partner in the first person without their input (e.g. Serendipity).
1. Suffering
지나가 언젠가
Everything goes, one day
분명히 확실히
Surely, without a doubt
지나가 언젠가
It shall pass, some day
밤이 가고 아침이 오듯이
Like how morning comes after night goes,
봄이 가고 여름이 오나
And summer comes after spring
꽃이 지고 열매가 익듯이
Like how fruits ripen after flowers wither away,
모든 것은 아파야만 해
Everything must suffer
Namjoon philosophises that we are all destined for suffering. Even the comfort of night, hope of spring and the beauty of flowers will fade.
But that also means that suffering itself must end. And that is knowledge we can hold on to in our dark times.
Your dark times will pass, everythingoes.
2. Drinking it
세상을 안고 숨을 훅 들이마셔 봐
I embrace the world and take a quick, deep breath
내 폐 안에 가득 들어찬 따가운 공기가 모든 걸 말해
The stinging air that fills my lungs says it all
그래 수없이 도망치고* 싶었던
Yeah, I who wanted to escape countless times
*This can also be heard as: 그래 수없이도 마시고 싶었던
Yeah, I who wanted to drink so many times
나 아파하고 무뎌지던 오랜 시간들
The long times I suffered through and became numb
바로 그 아래
Right underneath that
The language here is beautifully descriptive.
The words 들이마셔 in the first line means to suck in, to inhale, to breathe in. The two characters coloured in blue 마셔 is the verb for drinking.
The third line can also be heard as 그래 수없이도 마시고 싶었던, which means I, who wanted to drink (it) so many times.
If you have read my blog, the imagery of this verse should hit you differently as you should hopefully be able to make an instant connection to Sea, Always and I’m Fine.
In Always, we saw Namjoon at the sea contemplating his life and we can easily draw parallels with I’m Fine. In I’m Fine, we hear the sound of the waves and Namjoon saying: “I open my eyes under the painfully blue sky… I breathe in fully and my heart pounds, I can feel it so easily that I’m alive.”
With respect to the lyrics “the long times I suffered through and became numb, right underneath that” , I found it to be a bit awkward. What do you mean right underneath those long times of suffering? That does not make much sense.
However, if we consider this in the context of Sea, Always and I’m Fine (and now also Indigo’s teaser trailer of Namjoon floating in water), it is possible (and consistently poetic) that Namjoon meant right underneath that.
The water, the waves of the sea. Be it an actual or metaphorical sea representing hardship and suffering.
3. Wind and Wishes
Everyday I pray
내가 좀 더 나은 어른이 될 수 있게
That I may become a slightly better adult
And everyday I stay
사람도 아픔도 언젠가는 죽기에
Because all humans and all the pains eventually die
무뎌지려면 바람을 맞아야 하잖아
We have to face the wind to become numb
꿈 속에서는 영원할 수가 없잖아
Nothing can last forever in the dream
힘내란 뿌연 말 대신
Instead of those vague words to cheer me up,
다 그렇다는 거짓말 대신
instead of those lies that this is how it is supposed to be,
그저 이 모든 바람 바람처럼 지나가길, I pray
That it shall pass like the wind, I pray
바람 means (1) wind or (2) a wish.
Therefore it can also mean “That all these wishes pass like the wind, I pray”
When you listen to this verse, Namjoon voice is desperate and passionate. This, with the above lyrics, conveys Namjoon’s re-kindled spirit and will to live. We can observe his change in mindset as he goes from wanting to die (badbye and Always) to choosing to live and face the inevitable wind of suffering.
Namjoon sees the wind as an elemental force that makes him stronger, “we have to face the wind to become numb” and takes comfort in the face of these harsh winds that one day his suffering will end.
We can observe that this is the same wordplay from Trivia Love.
In Trivia Love, Namjoon sings:
넌 나의 바람, 바람, 바람
You’re my wish, wish, wish
Or, “You’re my wind, wind, wind”
In Trivia Love, 바람 is symbolic of his Love.
We saw from previous analyses that Namjoon went through a break up and struggled to move on as he deeply loved the person. Therefore, if we read the above lyrics in context of Trivia Love, we can derive the following meaning:
그저 이 모든 바람 바람처럼 지나가길 I pray
That my love for you shall pass like the wind, I pray
5. 지나가
First, a quick lesson in Hangul.
Firstly, the consonant “ㅇ” does not have any sound when it is placed first in a word. When it is placed first in a word, it takes on the sound of the preceding alphabet.
So for example: The consonant “ㄴ” makes an “N” sound, this is why “진 아가” (JinAGa) sounds the same as 지나가 (JiNaGa) because the 아 took on the “ㄴ” sound from “진” .
Secondly, 지나가 by itself is a verb. It is the equivalent of just saying “passing” or “pass” in English. A subject is needed to understand who is actioning the verb “Go” (e.g. The train is passing, we pass, they pass, etc etc.)
So if you imagine Namjoon pointing at a flower and saying 지나가, he is implying that the flower will pass one day. If you imagine Namjoon pointing at himself and saying 지나가, he is implying that he too will pass one day, and if he is making a gesture pointing at all of us, he is implying that we will all pass one day, etc.
Namjoon only actually says “Everything goes” once in Korean in the entire song. He only says it right at the end – 모든 건 지나가 (Modengorn, jinaga). 모든 건 = Everything.
Thirdly, tone and emphasis is important. If you say 지나가 wistfully in a questioning voice, it can be interpreted as “Does it pass?” If you say the 가 (meaning “Go”) in a supportive voice like “Go on, you can do it”, it conveys a supportive comforting message, if you say it in a quiet tone, it can convey a request to leave, or even a statement. A subtle shift in tone and body language can change the meaning.
And now, I will explain why this song is magical if your name so happens to be Jin.
Because of the way Hangul works, the following meanings are all phonetically the same:
지나가 = (Everything) passes, (Love) passes, (Suffering) passes, (Flowers) pass (or wither), (I) will pass, (You) will pass, (Your homework) will pass, etc
진 아가 = Jin baby (To be read with the meaning of a nickname like “Hey baby”)
진아 가 = Jin-ah, go (“Go” taking on the meaning of “Let’s go! You can do it! Fighting! Keep going.”)
진아 가 = Jin-ah go (“Go” taking on the meaning of pleading someone to leave. For example, “Jin, please go, I’m hurting”)
Therefore, those three simple words can take on different meanings:
Interpretation 1:
지나가, 지나가
(Flowers) wither, the day will pass and come to night
지나가, 지나가
(Our suffering) will pass, and this too will pass.
Interpretation 2:
진 아가, 지나가
Jin, baby, everything goes
진아 가, 진아 가
So Jin-ah you got this. Jin-ah fighting(!)
Interpretation 3:
진 아가, 지나가,
Jin baby, (Love) ends
지나가…
This is the end as “We” have come to pass…
진아, 가…
So go now Jin-ah…
Interpretation 4:
진 아가, 지나가?
Jin baby, will our suffering pass one day?
지나가, 진아 가
As everything ends, keep persevering Jin-ah
So play around, listen and explore interpretations!
Using the above principles, the following line 그저 이 모든 바람 바람처럼 지나가길 I pray can also have another meaning:
그저 이 모든 바람 바람처럼
진아 가길 I pray
That all these wishes be like the wind
and for Jin-ah to keep going, I pray
6. everythingoes
Assuming the above wordplay is intended, this explains why this song is stylised as “everythingoes” instead of “everything goes” like “forever rain”.
Namjoon intentionally styled the English title so that the letter “g” is being shared with the word “everything” and “goes” because in the letter “ㄴ” is being shared between 진아가 (Jinaga) and 지나가 (Jinaga) in the Korean title.
The sharing of the letter “g” hints that there is also a letter being shared in the Korean title.
Think about it, if this stylisation meant nothing, why didn’t Namjoon style “forever rain” as “foreverain” and give it a Korean title?
As we have seen in my blog, all Namjoon songs that have a Korean and English name hold some secret meaning.
Everything Namjoon does is intentional.
7. Rain
지나가
(Everything, everything, everything goes)
(Everything, everything, everything goes)
비가 와
모든 건 지나가
Everything goes
비가 와 (bi ga wah)
비가 = Rain
와 = Come
Using the same principles before, the way Namjoon says 비가 와 is ambiguous. Depending on your mood, some days it can sound like it is a plea for rain to come (which is consistent with Namjoon’s mood in forever rain, “I wish it rained all day… I hope it rains all day” ), on others it can sound like a statement, “it is raining”. Or maybe even a sense of foreboding “the rain is coming”.
Rain, as we will soon explore, is a friend to Namjoon in forever rain.
But Rain can also represent sadness, loneliness, or even salvation like in uhgood (어긋).
And so depending on your interpretation of 지나가, one interpretation might be more meaningful to you than the other.
For example, on a bad day where I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, I sing it in my head like a plea 비가 와 (bi ga wah) “rain please come”. I draw parallels of my difficulties to being in a desert and so the rain is my salvation and relief.
On rainy days or days I feel a little melancholy, I sing it in my head as a quiet statement.
On a day where I experience a breakup or rejection, I sing it with loneliness.
Whatever the case is… the rain will come or stop one day.

Hi there, I have to say each time I read one of your posts I get so overwhelmed with feelings I have to go lie down and contemplate my entire existence, but I’m so grateful for the work you’ve done and the analysis you’ve presented. I really admire your work, and I hope you will continue the series. Forever rain is my favorite mono track and I would really love to see your take on it.
I came back to this post after listening to Indigo and having some serious feelings about it that I think you must be aware of, namely that Yun begins with Yun Hyong-Keun’s monologue about Jin. Seon. Mi (Truth, Kindness and Beauty), with the conclusion that the most important is “Jin” (Truth). It took me over six months to come to this realization about Indigo, the record of RM’s twenties, with the thesis statement being Yun (“I wanna be a human, before I do some art”), and that Yun is the true song about Jin on the album (I’m sure many people think Closer is the song about Jin, which, while it is, I personally think it is about a specific period of time in their relationship), and that Yun is both the thesis statement for RM’s “archive of this twenties” and the statement song about Jin.
This realization actually hit home when I encountered a particular quote from Jin from the BTS biography, Beyond The Story, which was recently released. In this quote, Jin says, reflecting to RM upon the imminent debut of BTS as an idol group, “I was wondering if we could pursue our happiness a little first and then think about what was going to happen”. On my next listen of Yun it suddenly smacked me all at once in the face. That quote from Jin has the same meaning as “I wanna be a human before I do some art”, and then it occurred to me that Jin absolutely has to be the direct inspiration for this particular line.
Anyway I’m so sorry to ramble for so long at you, but I had nowhere else to scream about this revelation. But beyond that particular listen to Yun, with the full realization that it’s not just Jin being the most important of the three virtues, but the entire philosophy of “I wanna be a human before I do some art” must have been something that Jin asked for, even before they debuted.
Another line in Yun I then began to fixate on was “true beauty is a true sadness”. If we follow the opening wordplay on Jin/truth, then we could read that line several ways, all of which are consistent with your interpretations of the entire storyline so far. At this point I had that “overwhelmed” feeling again that I feel every time I read one of your blog posts.
The next day, I decided to do a close listening of No 2, just out of curiosity as to how the Indigo storyline “concludes”, and somehow also returned to your last blog post, which serendipitously mentions No 2!
And by golly, once again I was hit with how ACCURATE you have been. In No 2, there are once again references to waves. I’m not sure where things stand, only that there’s more gentleness in the future, but by golly, I genuinely feel like through your blog we catch a glimpse into an overwhelming, incredible, multidimensional interiority in someone’s personal story that sometimes feels like forbidden knowledge.
Thank you for what you’ve shared so far, and I don’t know how to say that this feels like the only space in which I can express what are my newfound feelings for Indigo now that I’ve pieced together some contextual clues.

Anyways, in Mono, everythingoes is the song that I find both comforting and depressing depending on the mood that I’m in when I’m listening to it. In fact, actually, that has been my whole mood when I listen to mono. But I guess that’s just the way it is, sometimes somethings bring you comfort and other times the same thing that brought you comfort can also make you feel down.
Nothing is absolute, and sure enough, everythingoes..

I really love the objective part of these analysis and i try to take the good parts of them, the cohesive and meaningful ones. the ones where its about Namjoons journey, musicality and his personal letters to us… rather than twist it and make it to something its not for my own personal agendas.
This blog have made it their mission to turn EVERY lyric of namjoon to be about Seokjin and namjin as a ship which is so ridiculous and an insult to Namjoons artistry.
I love namjin as a friendship duo but to dedicate a whole blog just to attribute all of Namjoons hard work to be about a silly ship, is disrespectful at best.
If you the author of this blog care about Namjoon enough and actually watch his content as of late and the depressing and concerning new years letter he shared with us about his immense lonliness you’d have known that Namjoon cant be in love with Seokjin. Hello G,i just want to say you are a genius and i cant wait for you to analyse Indigo. Wether they broke up again or not,their love story is the most beautiful.
This may be long but I will try to make this brief. I have been an ARMY for several years but had never heard of fanservice or the possibility of real coupes. Then a month before the Grammys this year I had a video recommended to me on YouTube, about song theories which led me to your blog. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and falling in love with Namjin and the love story that was painted so much that I lost sleep from staying up and reading.your blog. LOL. I didn’t know much about the members other than what I saw in music videos and performances on late night talk shows.but after reading your blog and doing my own research I found out what an amazing person Jin is. I found my ultimate and forever bias. I remember waking up and watching them board the plane to go to the Grammys and it felt “off”. I couldn’t understand. Well I did my own research, looking into actual videos not only of ships but ones not edited by fans trying to promote a certain fan ship but the original videos, vlives, interviews, ect., so I could see for myself. I wanted to know the truth, not some imagination that some people concocted to suit what they wanted. You mentioned in your blog about them breaking up in 2014. and if I am understanding by your song theories you think they got back together by the end of 2014 or 2015? Okay, I am coming from a different perspective and so our thoughts differ. You may be wondering then why am I still reading your blog, give me a moment I will try to explain. I do see where there is a possibility that Namjin was real during pre debut/debut.. but I in no way think they got back together in 2014 or anytime thereafter. I believe Jin’s feelings had moved on by at least the end of 2014 for sure (and he and his partner got together officially in 2016). Since there was a time before I thought it was interesting to see what happened when they may have been together and when Namjoon stopped writing about Jin and started writing about Jimin. I guess I should explain. I think there are 3 (three) actual couples that have been together for years.. I think they are all standing next to each other in their OFFICIAL line order, (Tae, Suga, Jin, JK, RM, Jimin). I have not one doubt about Jin, not one. I am a believer not a shipper. I am not some delusional teen either. I read that the song Lonely was written by Namjoon while at the Grammys, well he also apparently recommended the songs Rainbow and Dandelion (by OOhyo) at that time as well. What???? Jin had referred to himself as a dandelion before. Maybe I am reading too much into it but with RM, he usualy has a reason, maybe fanservice??? The song talks about a person who has been waiting for someone. I didn’t think RM and Jimin had broken up, because before the Grammys they bought homes in the same building on the same day or within a day of each other. They certainly seemed together at the airport and at the Grammys. A previous comment mentions a breakup during the LY series? Please cover your thoughts on the song recommendations but also his new songs. I may not be on the same page as you but I like how your mind works and would like to hear your thoughts. Hello, I was trying so hard not to react to this. But I still want to express my difference of opinion to certain things you have stated. On a group of seven people if you think there are 3 pairs that can be true, in my opinion it seems to be a bit fairy tail or fanfics. And regarding Jin, I love Jin a lot and I too sense that there are always some suspicious things around him, like he always gets special cake or always his birthday is more special than others( I am not saying that it is Namjoons doing, cause 2021 Jin bday cake was special and RM does not even knew it and he asked who bought it to which Hobi managed not to answer it directly), still I would never think JK and Jin in a romantic relationship(again it is in my perspective). I will give you the reason, they are more childish and they can hit each other or chase or being so closer than other members, if they are real couple then Big Hit would never risk to allow that stuff in public especially when there are lot of workers around them (Rumours can spread easily, and no one can be trusted in such a case) and in another case, they can act carefree and touch each other as if there is nothing to worry, just like siblings.
And like you said, we are very curious to know the truth as we love them so much. Still it is their life, whatever makes them happy will make us happy too.
I agree that 3 couples does sound like a stretch, I thought so too, but when Taegi and Minimoni were pointed out I could see how they could be possible. I apparently didn’t explain myself well in my previous comment because I was trying to be brief..The only couple I completely believe is the one involving Jin. I have not one doubt, not one. I am a believer not a shipper.You obviously don’t know their history. They were reported on back in 2016 which is when the “Tom and Jerry” act took off. It was a way to try and dispel the rumors. If you don’t believe in them, it doesn’t matter to me. If all you have seen or know about them is their being silly together then you have missed out on a WHOLE LOT. My original comment was to the author of this blog. I enjoyed her detail in explaining the songs. I don’t believe in Namjin but that doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy the work she has done. I don’t read/listen to only non-fiction books or watch only documentaries so for me this blog is no different, it was entertainment, which I have enjoyed.

I am not a shipper either, I just know one thing that there is something around Jin, ofcourse he is such a sweet soul and it is a natural thing to fall for him. Regarding the Birthday, you are correct its 2021. And Yes, I am aware of that scandle article about Jinkook as well. However dear, if you are claiming that they are couples for this sake, I would like to remaind you about Taehyung who is crazily obsessed with Jin(he even licked the cake which was on Jin’s lips in a vlive, just not that I can give you quite a lot of examples regarding Tae’s obsession), we know that they are the first ship and fan ship of Bangtan.
In my opinion, it is always Jin’s reaction which I trust. I am not trying to argue that Namjin is the real one either, however, in my perspective, Jin shows his affection in unique way to each in evey person and I feel something intimate the way he act around Namjoon. Most of the times he try to maintain poker face or brush it off with his humor, however in my perspective there are a little more suspicious moments regarding Jin’s action towards Namjoon.
But I do watch all the ships, and I love them so much. I am 34 years old and my logical sense is questioning a lot about the above mentioned ships. And I do respect your opinion and I know that Jungkook loves Jin so much and vise versa. I am not here to aruge, I just liked the way you see things that is why I have replied. Nice to meet you 🙂
Hello, after reading your comments i had to add my 2 cents. It seems your focus with ships is fanservice.
It would explain why you say you dont believe namjin are a thing since 2014, namjin are the one ship that dont do fanservice, infact, a lot of their moments get edited out.
Another thing i want to add, Jinkook imo is a very weird and dangerous ship.
Jk joined when he was 14, Jin brought him up, he was like a big brother to him, people who ship jinkook romantically really need to think about what damage they could be causing by talking about the possibility of jinkook being real going by the age gap and how young jk was when he joined. Jin is not a predator.
As for minimoni…LOL Jimin out of everyone ships namjin himself lol hes the one who goes out of his way to do things, for example: making a fake news article saying namjin are married the list does go on but if you want to look in to it, you can and will find lots to back this up too. This is why namjinists call him the namjin president lol. Anyway hope you have a nice 💜

Hi G, thank you for replying. i mean to ask, as you have stated they broke up and then pached up again(I just understood it from your previous theories), but it seems they broke up again (in change pt 2 “I can’t believe I loved you once, Fool me once, then fool me twice”). I can understand that it is their life and I support it, but after reading your articles I started feeling as if I am in their world so it hurts.

Hello, after Namjoon’s insta posts and new videos, I think they did not break up. And Namjoon himself stated that indigo album was his 2-3 years emotions. I did felt that they broke up as Namjoon stopped reacting or honeyfarming looking at jin, but Jin was a step ahead and always trying to communicate or indirectly flirt with Namjoon, so I felt bad for Jin.
Well now I think he is really missing him and todays video too Namjoon could not stop staring at Jin. And after hearing Closer song I can feel his pain, that he is always seeking Jin’s attention, but it is always the maknae line who gets it.

I don’t think they broke up however I believe just like any couple that they occasionally would fight and have lovers quarrels which would of-course inspire joonie to write some really sad lyrics or make them seem off and weird on camera. I do believe he us missing Jin a lot right now and going through it. In todays video he seemed a bit uneasy if i can use that word when jin talked about being away in the ARMY and yes they only had eyes for each other.
And Joonie insta sings are a giveaway.i dont really like reading into song recommendations but the funniest one for me was when jin appeared in running man and said he didnt like Joonie and joonie posted the song that said”even if you say its not it is”😂
Yes, I totally agree with you, its not like we can always be lovey dovey having difference of opinion is also an intimate love which allows us to be our real self. Namjoon is absolutely romantic and that song recommendation is top notch and the Busan concert selfie too. Then the way he always posts Jin ad photo(even for 1st month completion of his military) as if he does not have any Jin pic =D . Their love is this beautiful because they both are different admirable.
Yes,the fact that they argue and make up makes their relationship real and stronger not some fake love😊we have seen them fight before on screen,the blue village episode and the first run bts special which always amuses Jimin lol. Namjoon is philosophical and a deep thinker as we can see from his insta and even here on his lyrics analyses,its difficult to figure out jin but i feel he can be a bit lighter sometimes so ofcos if they fight joon would think too much about it.
Aaa and the Busan selfie after the TMA proposal got me screaming. It was such a boyfriend launch but mind you he posted only jin and him on festa as well. Anyway back to busan it seemed like they definitely roomed together🤭what do you think?
And yeah after 1 month of jin being in military he posted the ad and am sure he is so proud of Jin on his graduation day.
